Tethered to multiple IVs and any scrap of hope, we patients needed more than well-intentioned platitudes. We needed proof of a bonafide life beyond the endless treatment. Instead of high-profile tales of survivors scaling lofty peaks, we ached to hear of those daily epic adventures that create an extraordinary life, one that is actually accessible to survivors of daunting circumstances. Photos of those adventures covered my hospital room walls ... and helped save my life. Today I live those stories, proof that we are capable of more than we - or others - may imagine.
