Academic Experience
Current: Adjunct Instructor, South Mountain Community College, Phoenix, Arizona. (January 2017 – present). Administer online courses SUS 110 (Sustainable World), SSH 111 (Sustainable Cities, Honors) and ENV 101 (Introduction to Environmental Science, Honors).
Previous: Instructor and Online Instructional Consultant. Twenty years of full-time instructional experience in environmental science and sustainability, all in higher education, including six community colleges, universities public and private, and a university system (University of North Carolina). Courses included both curriculum and continuing education. Twelve of those years spent designing and teaching approximately 200 sections of online environmental courses. Reviewed and provided oversight for over 100 sections of online science courses. Designed an entire environmental science technology curriculum, including the physical facilities, and then served as Chairman. Leader in the concept of “flipping the instructor”, having administered online courses while ground-truthing environmental issues on four continents.

2015 - Grant: McKinnon, Jeff; Harris, Patrick; and Willson, Shaun. Expanding the Reach and Impact of Technology-Enhanced Course Redesign. Funded through University of North Carolina-General Administration.
2014 - Grant: Willson, Shaun. Using Case Studies to Incorporate Global Content and Enhance Best Practices in an Online Environmental Biology Course. Funded through University of North Carolina-Online.
2012 - Innovations in Course Content. Delivered a workshop through the East Carolina University Office for Faculty Excellence regarding best practices in online teaching, including assessments, community-building, academic integrity, and time-saving strategies.
2011 - The Seventh Generation. Delivered a seminar exploring the relationship of personal ecological footprints to future sustainability, with implications to international aid organizations. Heifer International, Little Rock, AR.
2010 - Workplace Sustainability. Delivered a course and program for business owners and employees, focusing on ecological footprints of individuals in the workplace and strategies for lowering negative environmental impacts. Motivational Speaker and Advocate. 2015 – present. Successfully challenged a prognosis of unlikely survival and predicted disability to become a global citizen and trail runner up to marathon distance. A few recent projects: Fast-packed the historic Rota Vicentina across southern Portugal, the Camino de Santiago across the Pyrenees, the Camino Primitivo from Spain’s north coast to Santiago, portions of the Beara Way in Ireland, and approximately 1000 miles of trails in California, New Mexico and Arizona. Rode the E’roica (vintage bicycle) event and the Palouse-Cascades trail (second longest in U.S.). Featured in several related media venues, such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Coping, and Conquer. Ambassador for the Cancer Support Community of Arizona and several cancer advocacy organizations.
Extended Travel on four continents, usually involving challenging circumstances of accommodation, transport, or involvement with local community.
