The 15 Oases of Anza Borrego
I used solo, self-supported, backcountry base camps to run, hike, and boulder to each of the oases of 600,000 acre Anza Borrego Desert State Park, a spectacular under-recognized landscape within the United Nations Biosphere Reserve program. It is also the largest state park in California, and contains the second designated Dark Sky Community in the world. These ecological islands are remnants of a wetter prehistoric climate, when camels, mammoths, and ground sloths roamed its vast savannas. This was one of my favorite adventures.
